Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy has issued the following statement on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day 2023:
"Today I encourage Whitby residents to join Canadians across the country in reflecting on the lasting trauma that residential schools created for generations of Indigenous people.
It is with deep sadness that we remember the children who were taken away never to return, the families left behind, and the survivors of residential schools.

On Tuesday, October 10 (2023), the Town of Whitby will host a Special Council Meeting where the Region of Durham will present on their 1635 Dundas project.
The purpose of the meeting is for the Region to provide Mayor, Council, and residents with a presentation and update on the project and provide a forum for guests to ask the Region questions, share ideas, and learn more about the Region’s shelter project and how they can help to shape the future of the facility.
