Pedestrian Crossovers

A pedestrian crossover is a crossing designated for pedestrians to cross a road. They are identified by specific signs, pavement markings and sometimes flashing lights with push buttons. Some have overhead signage and flashing lights.

If you are a pedestrian or a cyclist crossing the road:

Push the button to activate the flashing lights so drivers know you want to cross.
Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers so they see you before you cross.
Make sure all vehicles have stopped before you cross.
If a vehicle is too close to safely stop, allow the vehicle to proceed before entering the crosswalk.
If you are a cyclist, dismount and walk your bike across the road.

If you are a driver or a cyclist approaching a pedestrian crossover:

Slow down and look for pedestrians. If a pedestrian is waiting to cross, drivers must make a complete stop to let pedestrians cross safely.
Stop at the painted white triangles (yield to pedestrian triangles).
Wait for all pedestrians to cross the road completely.
Do not pass other stopped vehicles.

Difference Between Pedestrian Crossovers and Crosswalks

Rules and Fines at Crossovers

Drivers must come to a full stop at crossovers to allow pedestrians to cross safely. If you do not stop completely for pedestrians at a crossover, you can be fined up to $1,000 and issued four (4) demerit points on your driver’s licence. For more information, contact the Ministry of Transportation.
