The Town of Whitby supports cycling through a network of bike routes, shared roads, multi-use paths and trails. We are a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community, which means we're working hard to create more safe places to ride, along with cycling education and programming.

The Waterfront Trail provides 13 km of family-friendly cycling and walking. The trail passes a number of beautiful natural areas, including Lynde Shore Conservation Area, Thickson's Woods, the Rowe House, Port Whitby Marina, Rotary Sunrise Lake Park and Kiwanis Heydenshore Park.
The Greenbelt is 728,000 hectares of protected countryside that stretches from Rice Lake to the Niagara River. The Ontario Greenbelt Cycling Route is 600 km and a portion of the route passes through the Town. The Greenbelt route is mostly on-road cycling, with some challenging terrain.

Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, a bicycle is a vehicle. This means that, as a cyclist, you have the same responsibilities as a motorist to obey all traffic laws. You must share the road with other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The Active Transportation and Safe Roads Advisory Committee (ATSRAC) is responsible for advising Town Council on matters related to safe roads, active transportation and trails.
Biking to school helps you stay healthy, reduce environmental impact and decrease traffic congestion around schools. You can register your school to participate in Bike to School Week during Bike Week in September.
