February is Black History Month, a month to celebrate the diversity and achievements of Black people in Canada.
It is also a time to reflect on Canada’s history and the distinct challenges that Black people in Canada continue to face in their daily lives, such as systemic barriers, racism, and discrimination.
The 2025 theme for Black History Month in Canada is "Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations"
This month, the Whitby Public Library, has several ways everyone can get involved:
Mary Anne Chambers is a person with a story to tell. Her long list of accomplishments includes being a member of the Order of Ontario, a notable provincial politician, and a passionate academic advocate. To help mark Black History Month at the Whitby Library, Mary Anne will share her inspiring memoir, From the Heart, on February 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This riveting narrative features the author’s authentic voice as she shares her personal journey as a young woman in a new country who was warned she wouldn’t get very far. From the Heart is a story about grit, digging deep, and staying focused on what matters most. This event at the Central Library is in partnership with the Whitby Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee.
The Library will also feature engaging and interactive Black History Month displays. During the month of February, look for exhibits celebrating historic figures and inspirational stories. Staff have also curated multiple book lists featuring a variety of genres for adults, kids, and teens.
There will be children’s programs at the Central Library including Art and Soul. On February 7, children in grades 2-6 can create vibrant artwork inspired by iconic painter Alma Thomas. The library’s “Green Means Go” storytime and craft takes place on February 8. This all-ages drop-in program will help honour Garett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light.
There is plenty to choose from at the Whitby Public Library this Black History Month!
Join The Regional Municipality of Durham, along with municipal and community partners (including the Town of Whitby) on February 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Audley Recreation Centre in Ajax for an event called Together We Rise: Resistance, Resilience, Possibility. The celebration will feature keynote speaker Dr. Andrew B. Campbell (DR. ABC), performances and awards for community champions. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.
