With boating season underway, let’s all be safe and responsible when operating a watercraft at the Whitby Waterfront.

For a safe boating experience, follow these tips from the Manager of Whitby Marina and Harbour Facilities, Keenan Watters:

• Always wear a personal floatation device (PFD) and let a family member or friend know if you’re heading out on the water and for approximately how long.
• Check the marine forecast before heading out.
• Understand boating safety regulations and make sure you do not overload your boat with passengers or gear.
• Only operate a motorized boat if you have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, also known as a boating license.
• Make sure to have a reliable communication tool. Contact the Coast Guard directly by dialing *16 on your cell phone if you’re experiencing a boating emergency (VHF channel 16 on your marine radio).
