Twenty-seven Whitby youth were recognized at the 2020 Celebrating Youth Awards last night at a virtual awards ceremony held in recognition of their outstanding leadership and positive contributions to the community.
“Our young people continue to make Whitby a better place by volunteering their time and talents at school and with community service groups. We should all be inspired to see their spirit of giving continue despite the pandemic through initiatives such as the Online Reading Buddy Program,” said Mayor Don Mitchell. “Congratulations to each award winner and thank you for making us proud.”
Since 2002, the Celebrating Youth Awards have recognized Whitby youth aged 12 to 18 who through their selfless actions, volunteerism, or involvement in school or community organizations, have demonstrated a commitment to making Whitby a better place to live, work and play.
Collectively, this year’s 27 award winners were recognized for dedicating countless volunteer hours to school councils and events; participating as positive role models within school teams; and for serving as school and community ambassadors within organizations and movements like The Boys and Girls Club of Durham Region, The Court at Brooklin Retirement Home, Youth in Policing and more.
In addition to volunteering, this year’s award winners also served as active fundraisers for Denise House Women’s Shelter, Settlement House, Canadian Cancer Society and more.
The Celebrating Youth Awards are part of the Town’s commitment to remaining a Platinum Level Youth Friendly Community that engages and involves youth.
