Conpute, located at 1450 Hopkins Street in Whitby, has been a trusted provider of business technology consulting and IT services since 1969. Led by Steve Conaby, the third-generation owner, Conpute delivers managed IT support, cybersecurity solutions, and cloud services to businesses throughout the Durham Region and beyond. Over the years, it has built a reputation for helping businesses optimize their technology infrastructure and stay secure in an increasingly digital world.
Founded by Ray Conaby, the company started as a consumer electronics store in Oshawa, offering products like stereos and televisions. As technology evolved, so did the company’s focus. By the 1980s, Conpute shifted to providing computer services for businesses as companies began to adopt digital tools:
It was a natural evolution as businesses started needing more than just computers—they needed ongoing support and security.
Steve Conaby, President, Conpute
Conpute’s move to Whitby in 2017 was driven by a need for more space and a strategic desire to stay close to its roots in Durham Region. Whitby’s proximity to major transportation routes, such as the 401 and 407, made it an ideal location for the growing company:
We were expanding and needed a location that would support that growth. Whitby offered the space and convenience we were looking for.
Steve Conaby, President, Conpute
Since then, Conpute has continued to support local businesses and larger organizations with IT solutions tailored to their needs. What sets Conpute apart is its decision to keep all help desk and support operations local. While many IT companies choose to outsource these services, Conpute has opted to keep its team in-house:
We believe that by hiring locally, we can provide better service to our clients. This approach has allowed us to maintain strong relationships with our clients and respond quickly to their needs.
Steve Conaby, President, Conpute
In recent years, cybersecurity has become a key focus for Conpute. With businesses facing increasing risks from cyber threats, the company offers comprehensive security assessments to identify vulnerabilities and implement protective measures. One example involved a local business in Whitby that had significant security gaps. After working with Conpute, the business was able to address these issues and secure the necessary insurance to continue operating smoothly.
Conpute’s commitment to the community is also evident in its local involvement. The company regularly supports charitable organizations such as the Ignite Durham Learning Foundation and the Lakeridge Health Foundation. In 2023, a company-wide holiday raffle raised $1,900, which Conpute matched and donated to support local students. Conpute is also active in offering co-op placements to students from local schools and colleges, helping to nurture the next generation of tech professionals.
Looking ahead, Conpute plans to continue growing its services, with a focus on cybersecurity, AI, and business automation. Its longstanding presence in the Durham Region positions the company to meet the evolving needs of local businesses while staying true to its roots.
