Nestled in the heart of Whitby, Ontario, Melly's Market + Café isn't merely a spot to grab a coffee—it serves as a beacon of empowerment and inclusivity within the community. Founded with the vision of providing fulfilling opportunities for individuals with developmental and intellectual impairments, Melly's has emerged as a pioneering force, reshaping the landscape of social involvement and workplace training.
Aimee and Ellen, the visionaries behind Melly's, drew inspiration from their experiences mentoring young individuals yet to enter the workforce. Recognizing the need for specialized training and support, they embarked on a journey to create a space emphasizing skill development, social connections, and community engagement. Thus, Melly's Market + Café was born—a public venue offering not only food, but invaluable learning and experiential growth opportunities for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities:
Our vision for the future is simple: to see individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities actively engaged and represented in all facets of community life as both employees and customers, fully integrated and participating. With the right support, everyone can find their place in the world of work, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse society.

Melly’s Market is also brimming with unique gift ideas, they feature products from emerging local brands and feature seven disability-owned businesses, resulting in over $10,000 back into the hands of disability-owned businesses. Supporting entrepreneurs with disabilities helps amplify the message of the incredible talent within the disability community.
At the heart of Melly's is its Interactive Development Program, comprising thirty-two modules meticulously designed to foster holistic personal and professional development. From self-awareness to customer service skills, each aspect is tailored to the individual needs of the participants, ensuring a customized and enriching experience. With a dedicated team of coaches and a collaborative atmosphere, Melly's exemplifies the power of inclusive employment and skill-building.
Aimee and Ellen are pleased to be part of Whitby’s thriving business community. They both feel that Whitby has a welcoming and inclusive nature, which has allowed them to forge meaningful partnerships with neighboring businesses like Aspire Climbing, LCBO, and Unique Town Boutique. These businesses warmly embraced the program, hiring graduates and further enriching the community's tapestry of diversity and inclusivity. Aimee and Ellen's vision extends beyond their own establishment; they aspire to witness seamless integration of participants into a variety of workplaces, fostering a workforce that champions diversity and embraces inclusivity at every turn:
In Whitby, diversity isn't just welcomed—it's celebrated. Melly's Market + Café is proud to be part of a community that values the unique talents and contributions of every individual, fostering a more inclusive and vibrant neighborhood.
