Durham Region is a great place to live, work, play, and explore. It is a destination of choice for many people and businesses, and growth helps to fuel economic success while creating a more diverse and vibrant community. But it also puts pressure on already-stretched infrastructure and services, including roads, an aging-in-place population, and healthcare. We need to make sure services like healthcare can handle the stresses it’s going to face as our community continues to grow.

Growth in Durham Region by the numbers:

• Participants in the Town of Whitby’s recent Community Strategic Plan engagement said healthcare, including a new hospital, was a top priority.

• By 2051, the Region’s population is expected to hit 1.3 million.
• Between now and 2046, Durham Region's population is projected to grow by almost 40%. That's faster than the Ontario average.
• By 2031, almost one-third (33%) of the population is expected to be seniors, aged 65 and older. This compares to the average in Ontario, which is nearly 22%.
• According to the 2021 Census, there are more Whitby residents between the ages of 55-74 than children 0-14. And this number is going to continue to grow.

• By 2051, the population in Durham Region will increase by approximately 577,000 residents.

• The provincial government has committed to building 1.5 million new homes by 2031. More than 84,000 of those homes will be built in Durham.
