Did you know: a bronze statue of Sir William Stephenson has been installed in Celebration Square at the Whitby Public Library?

Award-winning Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy created the bronze statue to commemorate the life and legacy of Sir William Stephenson and tell the story of his ties to Whitby. Additional statue busts of Sir William Stephenson were also installed at Intrepid Park and Sir William Stephenson Public School.

Fun Facts:

• Sir William Stephenson founded and was in charge of Camp X (modern day Intrepid Park), where he trained spies during the Second World War.
• The Sir William Stephenson statue was fully funded by generous donors.
• The new public art aligns with the Town’s Culture Plan, and vision that culture and public art is central to storytelling of the past, present and future.
• Sir William Stephenson isn’t Ruth’s first public art piece in Whitby. She also created a commemorative bronze statue of late Cullen Gardens founder, Len Cullen – located at Cullen Central Park.
• The Archives at the Whitby Public Library is running a virtual Camp X Exhibit where you can learn about Whitby's secret past and the history of Camp X.
