I am pleased that an agreement between Town of Whitby and CUPE Local 53 FT has been ratified, bringing an end to the labour disruption.
Whitby Council extends sincere appreciation to the Town of Whitby’s bargaining team and CUPE Local 53 for reaching a deal that balances respect for our employees, with the needs of our residents.
The three-year agreement is competitive and fair, with zero impact on any current employee in their current position.
It includes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid holiday, a 9.5 per cent wage increase over three years, an increase to shift premiums, increased personal days from three to four, and significant benefit improvements.
By allowing the Town to schedule new staff at times that meet the needs of our residents, Whitby is in a strong position to deliver services and programs now, and into the future as we experience rapid growth.
Reaching this outcome required hard work and collaboration on both sides of the bargaining table.
Our employees play a vital role in providing the day-to-day services that residents rely on. Their contributions are integral to making Whitby a vibrant community with excellent quality of life.
The Town is now working to resume programs and services impacted by the labour disruption.
