The Town of Whitby is committed to having meaningful discussions and reaching a fair and reasonable agreement with CUPE Local 53 Full-time to end the current strike.

Over the past week, the Town has been monitoring the time and number of resident visits to its temporary waste drop-off sites located at Iroquois Park Sports Centre and McKinney Centre.

To ensure continued service and coverage during peak times as the strike continues, effective Sunday, October 29, the hours of operation at both waste drop-off locations will change.

NEW Hours of Operation Effective Sunday, October 29

Both sites will be closed on Sunday, October 29, with new hours to take effect that day as follows:

• Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.  
• Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Closed on Sunday

Please note: both waste drop-off locations will close early at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, for Halloween.

Yard Waste

The Town is working on a plan to manage yard waste going forward – stay up-to-date by downloading the Whitby Waste Buddy app from Google Play or the App Store.

What You Need To Know When Visiting A Waste Drop-off Site

• You must be a Whitby resident. Please ensure you have proof of address (ex. driver's licence, utility or tax bill) ready upon arrival. 
• Bag limits has been increased from four to six bags during this time. 
• Please put all garbage and green bin organic material together in regular garbage bags. 
• Waste will be collected in bins at each site and removed regularly.  

Accepted Items: 

• Garbage 
• Green bag organics (place in regular garbage bags, please do not bring your green bin)
• Halloween pumpkins will also be accepted at both sites.

Not Accepted: 

• Yard waste (leaves, sticks, etc.) 
• Construction materials (bricks, concrete, etc.) 
• Electronic waste (old computers, phones, etc.) 
• Bulky items (couches, toilets, etc.) 
• Hazardous materials 

Quick Facts

• Regular curbside garbage and green bin collection offered by the Town is currently suspended in all areas outside of West Whitby (see map), which has service contracted to a third party. 
• Leaf and yard waste collection is suspended across the community until further notice.  
• Curbside blue box collection continues. It is provided by the Region of Durham and is not impacted by this strike. 
• Drop-off sites are being carefully chosen in consultation with environmental and public health authorities and regulations to minimize impact.
