Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O.1990, c. O.18 as amended, provides that an owner of property designated under the Ontario Heritage Act may apply to Municipal Council to repeal the by-law or part thereof designating the property.
TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Whitby having considered a request under Section 32 on the Ontario Heritage Act intends repeal By-law 1998-86 which designates the property at 7143 Ashburn Road.
This house was built in 1864 by Matthewson. He was an influential farmer who also served on Whitby Township Council as councillor, Deputy Reeve and Reeve 1880-1890. The farm on which the house sat was known as Springfield Farm and was pictured in 1877 Ontario County Atlas.
The house is an interesting example of a mid-nineteenth century farm house combining Greek Revival and Gothic Revival Styles. The stands on a fine granite fieldstone foundation and is assumed to have been originally constructed with horizontal clapboard.
After many unsympathetic renovations, the subject property has lost most, if not all, of its cultural heritage value.
