The Town of Whitby will reschedule the October 10 Special Council Meeting to allow additional time to negotiate an agreement with the Region for the operation of the Region’s 1635 Dundas project. A new date will be shared as soon as possible.
The direction to negotiate an agreement with the Region was given by the Town of Whitby Council at its September 25 Committee of the Whole meeting. The proposed agreement will create a framework for how the Region will work in good faith with the Town and members of the community to ensure engagement on this project and address concerns raised by residents. Consideration of an Interim Control By-law for new low-barrier shelters and/or transitional housing by the Town of Whitby Council was deferred to allow time for these negotiations to occur.
Opportunities for community engagement on the terms of the draft agreement between the Town and Region for the operation of the 1635 Dundas project will be scheduled and communicated at a later date. The Region has committed to not opening the 1635 Dundas shelter until an agreement can be considered by Whitby Town Council and an opportunity provided for the community to have their say.
On October 3, the Region of Durham held a 1635 Dundas Community Engagement Session. View the presentation slides and learn more about this session.
