Whitby, February 18, 2022 – Today, the Ontario government announced the upcoming removal of tolls on Highways 412 and 418 on April 5. In response to this announcement, Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell has issued the following statement:
“Today's announcement is great news for residents of Whitby and the entire Durham Region. I applaud Premier Ford and the Ontario government on today’s announcement that tolls will be removed on Highways 412 and 418 effective this April. Special thanks to Minister Mulroney, MPP Coe and all Durham MPP’s for their advocacy and support.
A toll-free Highway 412 is something that I and all members of Whitby Town Council have been advocating for since the opening of the highway. The removal of tolls will have a significant and positive impact on our resident’s quality of life, reducing traffic congestion across our Town by helping residents going west to access the 407 more efficiently. The change will also help to relieve traffic pressure from the 401 and in Downtown Whitby, furthering the Town’s goal of creating safe and walkable communities. A toll-free highway will generate real economic value in our community by enabling the realization of the full marketability of employment lands located along the 412. Finally, it will defer the need to widen Lake Ridge Road and improve access to the proposed new hospital. On behalf of Whitby Town Council, I thank the Premier and Province for supporting this decision that will make Whitby an even greater place to live, work and play.”
