The Town of Whitby has lowered flags at its facilities to half-mast today in recognition of the National Day of Mourning.
The National Day of Mourning is observed each year on April 28 in Canada, and many countries around the world, to honour and remember workers who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related tragedy.
“Today we remember and honour those who have lost their lives, been injured or fallen ill on the job. On behalf of Council, our staff and our residents, I want to express my deepest sympathies to all who have lost loved ones. This year in particular, we pay tribute to those essential and frontline workers who sacrificed their health — and even their lives — as they served during the pandemic.”
