Did you know the Town maintains more the 1,140 lane kilometres of road and 320 kilometres of sidewalk during the winter? Town staff work hard to make our community safe to travel during the winter months by sanding, salting, grooming, plowing and removing snow.
The first snow has fallen with many more snow days to come. Here are five ways you can help Town staff keep you safe and moving this winter:
Moving your basketball and hockey nets off the road and placing them on your property keeps your belongings safe and helps snow plow operators move more easily through Whitby neighbourhoods. Sports equipment should always be placed a minimum of one metre away from the curb while on your property.
When snow hits, staff work around the clock to plow Whitby roads, lots and sidewalks. Help plow operators remove snow more quickly and easily by obeying the annual overnight on-street parking restriction and keeping your vehicle(s) off the road between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Learn more about parking.
Snow and ice-covered sidewalks can create a safety hazard. Help prevent avoidable slips, trips and falls this winter by clearing your sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Snow shoveled onto a road can pose a hazard to drivers and pedestrians. Help keep yourself and your neighbours safe by remembering not to throw snow from your driveway onto the road.
Snow plows are large vehicles with an important job to do. Help keep yourself, other drivers and Town plow operators safe while driving by maintaining a safe distance back from plows and other snow removal equipment.
