Project is part of Council’s commitment to revitalizing Whitby waterfront
Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a cold beverage from Town Brewery at the Whitby waterfront this summer.
Last night, Whitby Council approved a license agreement for a five-year pop-up food and beverage operation at the historic Pump House building.
“This is the first of many good news stories about the redevelopment of our waterfront,” says Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy, who has been working with Town Brewery on the project for several years. “The presence of Town Brewery will help make the waterfront more vibrant and welcoming for residents and visitors alike. We know that waterfront improvements are a priority for our community and I’m thrilled that this Council is delivering results.”
Town Brewery will open the pop-up location on July 1, just in time for Canada Day. It will remain open through fall 2023, at which time the licensed space will become available for other short-term tenants.
"We're extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with the Town of Whitby to bring life back to the historic Whitby Pump House this summer. Since 2017, we've operated Town Brewery with a focus on strengthening our community through good work and good times,” says Jeff Talmey, Co-founder at Town Brewery. “There's a lot of work ahead and details to iron out, but keep your eye on our socials for the latest updates. A huge thank you to the Town of Whitby staff and all members of council for your support on this project. We'll be working hard to make it something everyone in Whitby can enjoy and be proud of."
Last year, the Town completed work to rehabilitate and preserve the century-old Pump House building. Temporary exterior fences will be in place throughout the pilot project to protect the exterior structure.
This project is part of ongoing efforts by Whitby Council to revitalize the waterfront.
Recent public consultations on Whitby’s new Community Strategic Plan revealed that “enhancing public enjoyment of the waterfront” is one of the top priorities for Whitby residents.
