Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) is enhancing safety and response capabilities for lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle fires. This past summer, WFES equipped its Rescue and Engine units with specialized tools to tackle these challenging emergencies.
Lithium-ion battery fires pose unique challenges for first responders. These fires can reignite unexpectedly, burn at extremely high temperatures, and release hazardous gases. Traditional extinguishing methods may not be effective, making it crucial for firefighters to have the right equipment and techniques to manage these incidents safely.
Key updates include the deployment of AVD Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Extinguishers across all engines and rescue trucks. These extinguishers utilize a unique Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion solution that effectively isolates fuel sources and prevents re-ignition, making them essential for incidents involving devices such as laptops, e-bikes, and e-scooters.
Additionally, WFES has introduced fire blankets specifically designed to smother flames from electric vehicle fires. These blankets enhance firefighting efforts by covering and extinguishing flames more effectively.
To further ensure safety at emergency scenes, WFES has integrated Emergency EV plugs into its toolkit. These plugs secure electric vehicles, preventing movement and reducing the risk of accidents involving self-driving technology.
WFES is committed to adopting innovative tools and technologies to better serve the community and enhance safety for both responders and the public.
