The Town of Whitby is proud to announce it has joined the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, a Canadian network of 82 municipalities taking action to improve their policies against racism, discrimination, exclusion and intolerance.
Mayor Don Mitchell and the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (DIAC) participated in the official signing yesterday, May 6.
“We are committed to building a town where everyone is respected, connected and supported - a place everyone is proud to call home. Over the next year, with the guidance and advice of our Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, we will develop our own plan of action consistent with our coalition commitments to take new steps to support, recognize and celebrate our diverse community.”
This is a next step in the Town’s journey to becoming a more welcoming and inclusive community. In the coming months, the Town will be undertaking foundational work and community engagement to better understand the current state of diversity, equity and inclusion in the Town’s service delivery. The goal: to ensure the Town can continue to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse community.
The Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities currently brings together 82 municipalities that are committed to improve their practices to promote social inclusion, establish policies to eradicate racism and discrimination and promote human rights and diversity.
The Whitby Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee (DIAC) advises Council on the elimination of barriers for the diverse population of our community. It helps foster a greater understanding of ethno-cultural matters within the Town through community partnerships.
