As we approach the one-week mark of the CUPE Local 53 strike, I encourage both sides to get back to the bargaining table and work constructively towards an agreement that balances the needs of workers, with the Town’s responsibilities to our taxpayers.
I want to be clear that I support the collective bargaining process and I want to see a fair and competitive deal.
I’m calling on both sides to recognize that no concession bargaining is not realistic as we strive to meet the needs of our rapidly growing community.
It is critically important that the Town be able to deliver programs and services when and where our residents need them.
At this time, the Town has put forward an offer that includes a 9.5 per cent wage increase over three years, an increase to shift premiums, and significant benefit improvements. The sticking point is scheduling.
I am confident that the Town and CUPE Local 53 will be able to negotiate an agreement that puts our community first.
Thank you to Whitby residents for your patience as we navigate this situation.
We value all Town of Whitby employees and the work they do to make our community an amazing place to live.
